Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ham Listening?

It is a native, receive-only amateur-radio SDR listening client. Browse hundreds of public KiwiSDR receivers hosted by operators worldwide, open one, and tune the shortwave and amateur bands live β€” no radio, no antenna and no license required.

Do I need a license or an account?

No. Ham Listening is receive-only, so there is no license, no callsign and no sign-up needed just to listen. You can optionally add your callsign and grid locator to sort receivers near you and pre-select a country in the picker.

How do I tune?

Everything is on one screen. The VFO cursor stays fixed in the centre β€” drag to pan the live waterfall under it, pinch to zoom, and tap to jump. Pick your demodulation mode (AM, LSB, USB, CW or NFM) and adjust the passband and volume as you go.

How do I choose a receiver?

Use the two dropdowns: Country β†’ Source. The list is pulled live from a worldwide public-receiver directory (around 800 sites). The app reopens on your last receiver, and you can save the ones you like as favorites.

Does it use my microphone or transmit?

No. Ham Listening is strictly receive-only. It never transmits, and it never uses your microphone, camera or location. It only plays the audio the SDR receiver sends back.

Can I keep listening in the background?

Yes. The audio keeps playing when you switch to another app or lock the screen. The waterfall display pauses in the background to save battery, but the sound stays live.

Why is a receiver greyed out or unavailable?

Public receivers are volunteer-run, so some are full, temporarily offline, or opt out of external clients. Please be a considerate guest β€” try another site from the list if one won't open.

Where do my callsign, grid and favorites go?

They are stored only on your device. We (Unixeer) never receive them. There is no account and no server β€” clearing the app's data or uninstalling removes everything the app holds.
