The AMBE-family codecs that DMR, D-STAR, Fusion, P25 and NXDN use are compiled into the app. No plug-in to fetch, no file to sideload, no dongle or extra hardware — your phone, the app and an internet connection.
DMR is reached on BrandMeister through ODTP, the Open DMR Terminal Protocol they publish for software that has no radio in it. That is exactly what a phone is, so the app joins as a terminal in its own right rather than presenting itself as hardware. You need your own DMR ID and the per-ID hotspot security password you set in BrandMeister SelfCare.

Automatic levels in both directions, and manual trims on top of them. Your voice is held where other stations run whatever distance you hold the phone at — on DMR, NXDN and System Fusion that is the level their radios’ voice chips are designed for, a little hotter than on P25 — and it only adapts while you are actually speaking, so it never lifts room noise onto the air. Mains hum, the steady 100 or 120 Hz drone of an air conditioner, fan or transformer, is filtered out of your microphone first, so the voice codecs never turn it into a wobble in your voice, and the gaps between your words are turned down by 18 dB so the room does not reach the air as background noise. In the other direction, a weak station is brought up to something comfortable instead of staying faint however far you push Speaker trim. Both are switchable. A peak limiter is on by default: over-modulation is inaudible to you and only ever reaches you as a report from the far end. The mic trim applies to every network — they all share one microphone stream — and it is on the Network screen and in Settings, the same control in both places.
DMR, D-STAR, System Fusion, P25 and NXDN pick from a built-in list instead of a blank address box, with a search that understands a name the way a hotspot writes it (GB-CQ-WORLD finds 00013 · CQ-WORLD). A complete, dated copy ships with the app so the pickers work offline, and the D-STAR, System Fusion, P25 and NXDN lists refresh from DVRef at most once a day — with a Refresh now button when you want it sooner, and a switch that turns the automatic refresh off altogether. The DMR list is BrandMeister’s masters, and it is the copy that came with the app. That refresh is the only request the app makes to a server you did not choose yourself, so it is the one you can stop.
Tap to key up, tap again to unkey — hands-free on the loudspeaker or through your earphones, and keep hearing the channel in the background. By default the app waits for the channel to clear before it will key, so you do not transmit over someone mid-over — switchable if you need to break in.
